Women Mean Business

The Women Mean Business project aims to help shape a better offer for women in business and workplaces in Sutton, by celebrating the diversity of roles and creating a platform to develop a more tailored support offer.

The project responds to some specific issues in the borough, including:

  • Gender Pay Gap
  • Existing business support offer
  • Business data
  • Demographics

The council’s four-year corporate plan sets out an action “to provide support packages for small businesses and entrepreneurs and ensuring a skilled local workforce through our Skills Match programme.”

To address some of the issues presented above and to celebrate women’s achievements in organisations and businesses locally, Opportunity Sutton proposes to coordinate a number of events in the lead up to International Women’s Day in March 2019, which will may include seminars, workshops, presentations, roundtable discussions, breakfast meetings, and an inaugural women in business awards ceremony.

A series of speakers will be secured to inspire women across the borough, around some key themes, particularly where women are underrepresented in specific industries, including: Women in Science; Women in Engineering and Women in Planning. The events will give women the opportunity to network and create business and workplace links.

The week will culminate in a dedicated ‘Women Mean Business’ Awards dinner which will celebrate diversity, success, contribution and skills and which will be organised and hosted by Successful Sutton.

These events will be used as a platform to launch a conversation with women in business to help develop our understanding of the issues and barriers faced by women in the borough, with a view to creating a future strategy.

We are looking for inspirational women in the borough to help us celebrate International Women’s Day in March 2019. Could you be one of our speakers? Could you host an event? Do you know an inspirational women who could speak at an event?
