St. Helier Festival – Sutton
Read the story
The St Helier Festival is an annual event held in June to support, promote and facilitate community cohesion in the London Borough of Sutton. The Festival has become an important event in the St Helier Community calendar and is a not-for profit, grassroots resident led event organised by The Sutton Federation of Tenant and Resident Associations (SFTRA) and The St Helier Festival Steering Group, and is supported by The London Borough of Sutton, Sutton Housing Partnership, Sutton Safer Neighbourhoods, and The David Weir Leisure Centre. Sponsorship for the event is generously donated by our main Contractors of Sutton Housing Partnership.
This initiative was set up in November 2008 as a pilot project to bring together local residents living on the St Helier estate and is also aimed at embracing the whole borough in a multi-cultural and diverse Festival. Now entering its 7th Year, next year’s St Helier Festival is to be held on Saturday 13th June, 2015 and attracts in the region of 7,000 residents from all over the Borough. Our aim is to provide a free fun day for all in the community.
The Festival showcases local entertainment and talent, including music and dance; all performed on a main stage, and promotes local community groups and causes with stalls and information stands.
We have a ‘Big Top Circus’ and Circus workshop as one of our main attractions and a Mascot Race, including our own Mascot ‘Cyril the St Helier Squirrel’. The St Helier Festival aims to strengthen community spirit and encourage partnership working.
Next year, our aim is for the event to be even bigger with other main attractions, including a Punch and Judy Show, a giant inflatable slide. Included in the Arena area of the David Weir Leisure Centre, tournaments, walking football, tag rugby and other sporting activities are to take place.
We encourage everyone to get involved in next year’s St Helier Festival either by performing on the main stage, holding a community stall or holding a stall as a service provider in the ‘Info Zone’ which is supported and run by The London Borough of Sutton.
