The Opportunity Sutton Programme sets out its vision for Sutton to be “an enterprising enabling borough that is a magnet for business investment; that welcomes new entrepreneurs and social enterprises; nurtures its business base and removes barriers to enterprise. We want Sutton to have a competitive edge over our neighbours”.

Sutton currently offers a range of measures to support local businesses both new and existing.

Business Advice and Guidance

For new businesses the Economic Development Team offer a range of advice to new businesses approaching the service, this includes:

  • Where and how to access funding both grants and loans
  • Access to a property database of those premises available to rent
  • Information, advice and guidance from a regulation perspective i.e trading standards, food safety, health and safety and licensing (liaising closely with the relevant teams to [provide start up packs and information)
  • Signposting to the relevant support bodies

Enterprising Sutton is a programme of support for businesses in Sutton. Through Enterprising Sutton we are committed to helping businesses start up, grow and thrive. Start-up Sutton is the first of a series of projects within Enterprising Sutton. It is designed to give you the advice you need and help you launch and develop your own profitable business.

FoodSave- Helping businesses manage food waste

Food Save is a new ERDF/Mayor funded project, aiming to work with 240 SME’s from the Food industry across London. The aim is to help prevent food waste and to divert surplus food to good purposes. Free Collection of Unwanted Electrical Items

Businesses in Sutton can benefit from a free collection of unwanted electrical items. From fridges to hairdryers, printers to PCs… just contact 123 Recycle for Free to arrange a collection time for your old electrical items.

They collect directly from your business premises and then reuse or recycle your electrical items back into raw materials at an Authorised Treatment Facility in Kent.

SHINE Business Incubator

Sutton is currently working in conjunction with Sutton College of Adult Learning (SCOLA) to provide access to a range of business support measures in a professional environment. SHINE is a business incubator for new and existing businesses, it will act as a springboard allowing businesses to become successful and sustainable in these difficult economic times. It will provide business facilities including hot-desking space and meeting rooms as well as an opportunity for businesses to meet and network. More specifically it provides; flexible business incubation, access to business mentors, access to short business advice courses, seminars and business talks.

Businesses get up to £3,000 for high-speed broadband

Your business could get up to £3k towards a high-speed broadband connection, usually of a 30Mbit/s or more. With high speed broadband you can store and access files via the cloud, transfer large files quickly and securely and enjoy a more productive and reliable service every day. The next step is to get a connection voucher. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport is making available up to £100 million to SMEs across 22 UK cities. This scheme will be rolled out by the Mayor of London and London boroughs including Sutton. The voucher can also be used for a dedicated business grade broadband service.
